Tribute to Duan (English)
Duan was born on June 23, 1963, in Xi’an, China, to Jianjun Liu and Licun Mao. From a young
age, he showed remarkable intelligence, discipline, and a deep love of learning. He
completed his elementary school education at Northwest University Affiliated Elementary
School (西北大学附小) and attended middle and high school at Northwest University
Affiliated High School (西北大学附中), both located in his hometown of Xi’an.
In 1981, Duan was accepted into the Beijing Institute of Technology (北京理工大学), where
he majored in Applied Mechanics (应用力学). He completed both his undergraduate and
graduate studies there by 1988. After graduation, he remained at the university as a fellow,
contributing to research and teaching.
In 1993, Duan came to the United States on a full scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in
Computer Science at the University of Illinois Chicago, which he earned in May 1995.
He began his professional career at Masterchart in Illinois, and in 2000, he joined
Morningstar, where he worked for 25 years in multiple roles as both an individual
contributor and team lead.
In the summer of 2002, Duan married UCheng Lei, lovingly known as Maggie Lei. Though
they did not have children, their relationship was filled with love and unwavering support.
Not long after their marriage, Duan was diagnosed with cancer. He battled bravely and
became a 21-year cancer survivor, never allowing illness to define him. He remained active
in his work and lived life fully and gratefully.
Duan loved traveling, cooking, and enjoying all different kinds of sports games. He will be
remembered for his calm demeanor, kindness, integrity, and quiet strength. His journey was
one of perseverance, wisdom, and grace. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who
knew and loved him.
缅怀劉端(中文)
劉端于1963年6月23日出生于中国西安,父母是刘建军先生和毛黎村女士。从小他就展现
出非凡的智慧、严谨的学习态度和对知识的热爱。他先后就读于西北大学附属小学和西北
大学附属中学,为未来的学术之路打下了坚实的基础。
1981年,劉端考入中国著名高校北京理工大学,主修应用力学。他于1988年完成本硕连
读后留校任教,投身于科研和教学工作。
1993年,他获得全额奖学金赴美留学,在伊利诺伊大学芝加哥分校攻读计算机科学硕士学
位,并于1995年5月顺利毕业。
毕业后,劉端在伊利诺伊州的Masterchart公司开始了软件工程师的职业生涯。2000年,
他加入Morningstar公司,并在接下来的25年中担任多个职位,是技术骨干也是团队的领
导者。
2002年夏天,劉端与UCheng Lei女士(Maggie Lei)结为连理。虽然他们没有子女,但他
们的生活充满了爱与支持,彼此相伴相守。
婚后不久,劉端被诊断患有癌症。他以坚强的意志和乐观的态度与病魔抗争,成为一名抗
癌21年的勇士。他从未让病痛定义他,始终积极工作、热爱生活。
劉端热爱旅行、烹饪,也喜欢各种体育赛事。他将以其平和的性格、善良、正直和坚定的
内心被人们铭记。他的一生是坚韧、智慧与优雅的写照,他的记忆将永远留存在我们心中
