Sandra Marie Schurla (née Caputo) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Sandy shared nearly 64 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Pete. She is survived by her son Peter Joseph (Gia), daughter Leslie, her grandchildren Joseph and Nicholas Kish, Luka and Natalie Schurla, her brother Mike Caputo, and many nieces and nephews.
Born in 1941 to Joe “Popeye” Caputo and Eleanor (née Mancuso), Sandy’s mother tragically passed away shortly after her birth. She was lovingly raised by her father and grandparents, who instilled in her the deep love of family and tradition that defined her life.
She married the love of her life, Pete, in 1962, and together they shared nearly sixty‑four years of devotion, faith, and partnership. Sandy served with compassion in the Medical Division of the Chicago Police Department, becoming a quiet source of comfort and strength to countless officers and their families.
Sandy adored Frank Sinatra and John Wayne movies. And while she lovingly embraced her husband’s Croatian heritage, her Italian roots were always present—in her beauty, her cooking, her traditions, and her unmistakable passion for life.
Her home was the heart of the family, filled with unforgettable meals, laughter, and the warmth she extended to everyone who walked through her door. To her grandchildren, she was “Gaga,” and her love for them was boundless.
She leaves behind a legacy of faith, generosity, and unwavering love. Sandy is reunited with her beloved husband, many cherished family members, and the woman whose face she always longed to see—her mother, Eleanor. She will be forever cherished by her children, grandchildren, and all who were blessed to know her.
